Bird Training Tips

As well as your bird behaving whilst in its bird cage you will want to have some control over the bird whilst petting it and allowing it the freedom of your front room on its daily petting expedition from the cage.

Here are some very simple steps to help you maintain control of your bird -

The key to getting the most from your parrot is to keeping it positive.

Three core elements provide the foundation for your parrot training:

  1. If your Parrot makes a positive step reward it.
  2. If your Parrot does something untoward then you ignore it. (Paying it too much attention will re-inforce the fact that undesirable behaviour breeds attention)
  3. No matter what your parrot does you do not punish your Parrot.

Key things to remember before you commence training are;

  1. If you are relaxed when training your Parrot you are more likely to remain positive.
  2. Do not attempt to train the bird when it is hungry or distracted by something going on around it.
  3. Short and sweet is more effective than long and arduous.
  4. Use a reward that the bird sees as a treat but ensure that you don’t over feed it.
  5. Once the bird has learnt a particualr task then replace the treat with praise.
  6. Always end training on a success rather than a failure so the bird looks forward to the next training session.
  7. Ensure any training is fun for the bird, we don’t respond well to tasks we don’t enjoy so why would your bird?
